Atlas The Mothit
Species and Universe

Mothits from Atlas's universe are actually a hive species, with a queen and workers. The Mothits planet is named the Great Hive. Atlas is a worker, thus being genderless (as is most members of their species) Each moth is analyzed during their grub and cocoon stage to determine where in society they will best fit. It is not a perefct system, but it's what they consider normal. Most species on The Great Hive are hive-based.

Mothits have figured out how to genetically engineer queens and drones of other species in order to produce worker bugs that will benefit Mothits in ways their own workers cannot. Almost everything is a bug; multitools, bandaids, keys and locks, matches, computers, even buildings (though complex items like computers and buildings are very unique bugs). Atlas was designated to be a doctor and loved its job dearly.

When the disease known as The Silver Death began to spread, Atlas was one of the lucky few who seemed to be immune to it. The hive-based genetics meant imunnity was rare, and Atalas immediately took to try and find a cure. It is unknown if Atlas's queen, Willowherb is immune or not, but the building Atlas was experimenting in certainly was not! Lucky for it, a mysterious door not made of bugs suddenly appeared as it tried to flee the building...

Mothit Culture

As Mohits are a Hive species, their queen (in Atlas's case, Queen Willowherb) makes all descisions for the hive. When a queen dies, her position is typically taken over by one over her daughters. Occasionally, a young queen from a different hive will take over. Long ago, Hives would be destroyed quite commonly. These days, many hives have delicate alliances to trade resources, knowledge, and armies, which has resulted in Mega Hives and Mega Queens, who have millions of workers.

Worker Mothits don't really do romance, as most of them will only ever meet their siblings. They do however from strong friendships and tend to live in groups of 3-7. Atlas lived with 4 others: Cecropia, Luna, Festoon, and Yellow Belle.

All grubs are raised comunnally by kindergardeners. They are examined for any defects and constantly put through tests to see which career they may be best suited to. The most important jobs that I think require explanation are: Managers, Bug Gardeners, Plant Gardeners, and Soldier-Labourers.

Managers deal with the tranfering of information to the queen and making small desicions where her input is not required. They most commonly deal with hive-wide resource managment.

Gardeners grow things (shocker!!!!) plant gardeners are what you and i think of as gardeners. Bug gardeners grow bugs! You need a band-aid? You don't get one of those from a drugstore, you get them from a bug gardener who grows aid-bugs!

Soldier-labourers are pretty straight forward. If a war happens, or intruders are detected, a Soldier-labourer will deal with it. they are also the ones who stay up on shifts to watch the hive during The Sleep. Whne not actively fighting, they are often called upon to do any heavy-lifting or menial task.

Most worker mothits use it/its pronouns, as only queens and drones have genders (queens using she/her, drones using he/him)

The Great Hive

The Great Hive is home to many Hives of Mothits, though only the Hive of Queen Willowherb is important to our story, as she is Atlas's queen. The Great Hive has 6 moons, though aside from that it is quite similar to earth, with green chlorophyll and a blue sky, though there is markedly more plants and bugs. Mothits have divided their yeasr into three moths: The Wake, the Work, and The Sleep.

The Wake is the shortest season and is equivilant to Earth's early spring. Snow is melting, Queens are laying the most eggs they ever will throughout the year, and Mothits and other bugs are getting ready for the day to day activities of The Work.

Speaking of, The Work is the longest season, covering late spring, summer, and early autumn. This is where most work is done, most Mothit grubs will enter their cocoons by The Work's end, and Adult Mothits work hard on whatever their job is. Trade between hives is at its peak, as everything has to arrive and its destination before The Sleep, no matter how far away it is.

The Sleep is the season where the least happens, it is analogous to earth's late autumn and winter. Almost the whole hemisphere is asleeps, the only Mothits awake are those on watch to ensure nothing explodes or is stolen. It has the highest mortality rate for Mothits and other bugs, not because it's dangerous, but because all metabolisms naturally slow during this time of the year, and if you're already on your way out, well, that's likely going to be the thing that pushes you over the edge. It was during The Sleep that the Silver Death hit Queen Willowherb's hive.

The Silver Death

It is unkown where The Silver Death originated. All the is known is that mid-Sleep, those on guard noticed buldings flaking away into silver dust. At first the believed it was nothing to be worried about, but as exo-skeleton gave way to flesh, and even the flesh began to flake away, the guards became concerned and bagan to wake up others in concern. At first the woke bug gardeners, but as the bug gardeners worked, they noticed their own exo-skeleton beginning to flake aswell. At that moment, everyone was woken up, desipite The Sleep not being over.

Not everyone had begun to flake yet, even some who had been in very close proximity had not begun to flake. Others who had had barely any contact with The Silver Death did show signs of flaking. Anything that is bugs is at risk of flaking, which is most things on the Great Hive. A few things, like hazmat suits and sterile units are NOT bugs. These however are only available to those in the medical and scientific jobs.

Atlas was one of the lucky few who had easy access to these things. It began research as quickly as possible on a cure for the Silver Death. It made great progress, but still needed to refine the concoction. While carrying the prototype of cure to Managers to show its progress, the building it was in began to flake away at an alarming rate.

This was not a building with sterile units as far as Atlas was concerned, but the sight of a non-bug door was hope that maybe this building did have a sterile unit, and Atlas went in it without a second thought. It wasn't a sterile room. It was a portal to another world. Still better than where the Silver death is.

About Atlas

Atlas is very driven in its work. It as exemplary worker, almost to a fault. It sees no point point in making things anything more than functional. This is unusal for Mothits, who generally take pride in developing beautiful gem-like bugs, however in Atlas's field its position on art and beauty is considered a boon. Being alive is more desirable than being beautiful.
